Having too much fun in a high school?
- And you started making videos when you became a high school student.
I did because it wouldn't bother my middle school anymore. I thought it would be okay if my high school didn't find out about it, that's why I started again.
- Were you carried away by making videos when you dropped out of high school? Is that a reason?
No, I entered into the high school with the lowest academic level in Tokyo, but I couldn't even catch up with that high school. My high school had a very strict rule such as if I forget to submit any homeworks, I would get 1 (as the lowest grade) for that subject. I was making an effort during my freshman year, but...after all I ended up dropping out.
- Did you enjoy your high school years though?
I felt like I was going to school for fun. I was surrounded by many interesting friends. We would talk about next class then somebody says, "Let's come up with what to do at the corner of classroom since next class is math."
-Did any of your friends show up on your videos?
No. I didn't really tell my friends in high school that I was making videos on the Internet, because I was shy about it. But they eventually got to know.
-We've heard that you were very popular with girls on your freshman year in high school...?
I was going to a technical high school, and there are many girls in a food department. I was dating with the cutest girl in my class. But once I went out on a date with her, I noticed that she looked cute in such a place like a technical high school, my school, but outside the school, she was not really....
-You are cruel!!
I feel sorry lol After dating with her I also dated with several girls outside my high school. I always had girlfriends during summer.
-Just during summer?
I dated with 4 or 5 girls during my summer break. Once the break was over, I didn't have any girlfriends until I became Sophmore. That was a period of time in my life that I got the most attentions from girls.
- Was that true you have been dumped because you were making videos on the Internet?
That was a girl I started dating on summer during my sophomore year. She was going to a very smart high school unlike me. We couldn't even manage an actual conversation sometimes because we lived in such a different world. One day she found my videos on the Internet and told me, "I didn't think you were this stupid", "I want you stop making videos".
- You were between your girlfriend and videos.
I had absolutely no intention to quit making my videos, so we broke up.
- Did you already have a style in which you would do anything for the quality of your videos?
You can say that. When I watched Megwin's video, I respected him. My style in video was definitely inspired by him. I always preferred watching TV shows like Megwin's or my videos. My video would be uninspiring if I didn't take risks.
- Megwin has a huge influence over you.
My style is devoting myself to videos like Megin. I edit like Hikakin or Hajime Shachou in a way I wouldn't have a part that I am not talking.
That feeling when an idea comes down
- Even after a breakup you continued making videos everyday and now you have become a well-known YouTuber. When did you think that making videos would be your career?
I watched a video of a caucasian man introducing products in Japanese on YouTube. I thought, "Who is this guy?". I sent him a message to ask if he could meet with me. The guy I met was Dante (*PDS Kabushiki gaisha). Dante taught me about an affiliate program on YouTube when we first met.
- So did you resister for the affiliate program after you met Dante?
No lol I thought it is a little complicated process, so I left my channel as it was for about a year. But once I resistered, I felt like this could be a job, even though my part time job paid better at that time. I always liked the idea of making my hobby a job. I decided to take it seriously with my passion.
- Was there a turning point in your channel before many viewers started watching your videos?
The turning point was when I uploaded a video of me eating cicadas. The video was viewed 300,000 times for 2 days. Many people started watching my videos everyday after that.
- How did your parent react when you said you want to make YouTube a career?
My mother wanted me study and get in a good college, but my father had a similar experience. He told me that I could do what I want to do.
- How did your sister react?
She didn't really react to that...but she was annoyed whenever I made noise in my house because I was making videos lol
*Dante is a younger brother of PDR, who is also famous on YouTube!
Mahoto and PDR are very close friends too.
Part 3 is coming soon.
